• Covid-19 Kia OraI’m writing to you, our valued partners, customers and suppliers, to give you an update on ENL’s measures with the impact of Covid-19. These are unprecedented days and as Peter Busfield, Executive Director of the New Zealand Marine Industry Association says, no matter where you are in the world “we are all in this together.”* There is no doubt this is one of ENL’s most challenging times in our 74 year history. New Zealand has been forced into total lockdown by this ruthless, invisible enemy since the 26th of March. Our immediate focus has been protecting the health and safety of our people and their families, while we plan for a future that we will never take for granted.Today our R&D, Engineering Services, Sales and Customer Care divisions continue to operate at full strength, albeit from home, as we respectively continue to develop world class products and offer technical support to our world-wide customer base. We’ve had to adapt to this new environment and thanks to technology and a dedicated team, all ENL staff are in a good position to assist with any questions you may have. NZ Marine industry temporarily suspended

• Covid-19 This is an excerpt from an article by Barry Thompson published on the IBI News website March 31, 2020. With New Zealand now in total lockdown, the country’s entire marine industry has ceased operations until possibly the end of April. The NZ Coastguard has also requested that Kiwis do not go boating. “The next phase of our lives will be new to us all,” says Peter Busfield, executive director of the New Zealand Marine Industry Association. “The only thing we do know, is that we are all in this together. Just as if we were all affected by an earthquake or tsunami. And when I refer to ‘we’, I mean every person on this planet.” Busfield says there is no escaping the immediate economic effects but hopefully the swift action by the New Zealand government and the people of New Zealand following orders in true military fashion will see the virus stamped out in NZ. The New Zealand government has implemented a three-month wage subsidy programme and the banks have issued a six-month mortgage freeze to assist New Zealanders to survive the Covid-19 pandemic. “In doing so, NZ will not be the same as the rest of the world. We will be the envy of most, as we will likely be the first country to be able to focus on starting to plan for our new future – the plan that will bring us prosperity once again. “What I found during the first week of New Zealand’s Level 4 lockdown was the initial shock of and the magnitude of what was happening. As an employer of passionate and dedicated people at the NZ Marine Industry Association headquarters in Westhaven, Auckland, representative of 500 marine industry companies nationwide and a husband, father and grandfather, I felt responsible for leading and assisting these people where I could.” Busfield added that It was exhausting in the first few days, ”making hurried arrangements for setting up some business continuity from home-based staff and working with my board to have some pay for the staff over the stand down period and then working with my daughter and her partner in how to manage a gym business that went from a bustling, growing, vibrant and profitable company to zero in a matter of days. “So, where to from here? We are all affected – some more majorly than others – but all majorly. We can’t go back in time; we are faced with what we have in front of us. What I found is that after the realisation, sadness, stress, some anger and exhaustion over what has happened, I gained some optimism and renewed energy as soon as I started to map out possible future plans for the maximising of opportunities for the New Zealand marine industry, NZ Marine Industry Association operations, and my own family. “I am confident that with the skills, the can-do attitude and the determination of New Zealanders to achieve what we set out to do, one way or the other, that we will reach our new goals. For people who love boats and boating you can now prioritise to have more time to engage with friends and family in the natural environment that the sea and lakes provide you with. Seeing underwater Going below the surface in search of underwater volcanoes was also the perfect opportunity for the crew to use UMBRA’s pioneering WASSP multibeam sonar set-up. UMBRA is wirelessly connected to the four other boats in the fleet – the mother yacht ROCHADE, the mother yacht’s tender, and two of UMBRA’s tenders. It is the first group of boats in the world to be connected with five WASSP systems. Each of these systems link together so they never have to go into an area without knowing the seafloor bathymetry. Building the dive profile, while looking into the types of currents and obstructions, makes UMBRA a proper exploration platform.   “We are actually doing some of the beta testing for the WASSP set-up, as nobody else goes out and does a 500 plus metre 3D reef mapping without being a research vessel. If you’re on a regular white yacht, you are only looking for a place to anchor, whereas with UMBRA what the crew does it that we are constantly looking for new places to explore.”

WASSP Technology Utilised by US University Students

Oceanography students at the University of Rhode Island have been busy utilising the latest in WASSP Multibeam technology as part of their research studies.  The students who are specialising in marine robotics, remote sensing and mapping have recently started using a WASSP S3 Multibeam system as part of a project to survey inland ponds and coastal estuaries.   The students have deployed the WASSP Multibeam system aboard a specially developed autonomous kayak. “We hope to accomplish a few things with the WASSP Multibeam in a number of projects,” says University of Rhode Island PHD student and researcher, Kristopher Krasnosky. “Our unmanned vehicle is an autonomous kayak that can be deployed out of the bed of a pickup truck. We use it to collect environmental data and conduct bathymetric surveys. We also use it as a test platform for new autonomy algorithms.  “Currently we have a project to survey inland ponds and coastal estuaries. Our kayak is going to be the main workhorse for that project.”  During initial trials, the WASSP multibeam was able to profile ripples on the estuary floor up to 15cm in distance apart. Krasnosky is also using the WASSP system as part of his PhD dissertation. “I am using gaussian process regression (GPR), a computationally heavy bathymetry processing technique, to aid in autonomous survey path planning in real time. GPR also enhances the effective resolution of the finished multibeam map.  This allows us to pull even more resolution out of the WASSP maps.” Becoming the go-to system for the worlds hydrograhic survey industry, the WASSP S3 is purpose-built for survey and mapping and has been designed with the entry level market in mind: budget, operational needs, and future technology roll-out. Scanning a 120 degrees swath port to starboard and using 224 beams, WASSP S3 can deliver accurate, high quality data in even the most demanding marine environments. By using advanced signal processing, you get a complete picture of seafloor bathymetry with ease. The S3 is one of the worlds most cost-effective professional survey and mapping multibeam sonar solutions.   “We decided to go with he WASSP system because it was the right balance of price to performance for our project.  The other big selling point was the Linux API that the WASSP developers provided,” says Chris Roman, Ph.D. Professor of Oceanography University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography. “It is critical for our work that we can read the data from the device in real time. We passed over several other systems (especially in this price range) because we simply could not interface with them the way we wished.”   Increasingly, WASSP Multibeam systems are being used by more research and scientific agencies, with WASSP Global Sales & Marketing Manager Rufus Whiteford saying it’s the flexibility of the WASSP system that makes it an easy and cost effective platform for organisations to use. “We’re very pleased to see WASSP being used as a very serious tool for scientific and academic research. It speaks volumes about the credibility of our product and the flexibility of our interface,” says Whiteford.

  WASSP Multibeam is becoming the sounder system of choice for recreational fishermen in New Zealand, with increasing numbers turning to WASSP’s leading technology to scan and profile their fishing environment. With 224 beams in action users are able to understand the underwater environment to locate fish faster over a much wider area than traditional single beam systems. And most importantly, be able to see the seafloor structure and detect hardness changes, giving an increased understanding of the underwater environment their target species are living in. “The ability to go out to depths of up to 100m and profile an area in just a couple of passes is amazing. Other systems it would take hours to gather the same information and multiple passes. “Once profiled, you can very quickly have the rods out and be on the fish.” “If you want the very best in fish finding technology, WASSP is it.” The newly launched WASSP F3X offers significantly more power along with long pulse time that equates to more energy in the water meaning more clarity in shallow and medium depths of 50 to 500m. The F3X with the 80kHz transducer provides the ability to operate as a sounder in depths of 1000m and provide mapping of the sea floor with Water Column Targets (fish) shown in 850m of water. F3X also comes as standard with WASSP’s patent pending Interference Management Systems (IMS) including AKP ready for install on complex vessels with several other sounders and sonars installed. WASSP Multibeam, inline with their company philosophy of constant improvement, have invested in many new enhancements, bug fixes and licenses with the announcement of the release of two new firmware updates, CDX 4.0 and DRX 6.0, for its F3 and F3X multibeam sonar systems designed for the fishing industry. These updates will add a number of new functions to WASSP systems currently in use and, in most cases, can be installed by existing users free-of-charge. The firmware update will include a new TVG (20 and 40) option, added to the existing mode, shows the full water column and does not need to be tuned for different depths. Also included is a new Multiresolution Database with automatic, depth-adjusted, best resolution mapping which can be used in all depths and to which existing databases can be uploaded. A greatly improved mapping algorithm will reduce roll errors by using best data, both new and historic, and significantly enhance mapping and tracking in shallow water of less than 5m. Add to that, aligned water column targets in sonar, sounder, 2D and 3D mapping can now be displayed in the same colour according to target or volumetric strength. WASSP Multibeam has announced the release of two new firmware updates, CDX 4.0 and DRX 6.0, for its S Series multibeam sonar systems designed for the survey market, including dredging, dive site profiling, wreck hunting and many other survey activities. These updates will add a number of new functions to WASSP systems currently in use and, in most cases, can be installed by the user free-of-charge. A new Compensation Control adjusts for sea temperature and salinity, ensuring that the seafloor remains flat irrespective of different absorption losses in the water column. Whether using CDX or a third-party Hydro Survey software suite, the firmware update will include, the new Volumetric Strength option, added to the existing Target Strength mode, enables concentration on seafloor targets whilst filtering out smaller water column targets. A greatly improved mapping algorithm significantly enhances mapping and tracking in shallow waters with a depth of less than 5m. A new Multiresolution Database with automatic, depth-adjustment, best resolution mapping which can be used in all depths and to which existing databases can be uploaded. GSF data can now be exported including backscatter data (with relevant licenses) and a greatly improved mapping algorithm to reduce Roll errors by using best data, both new and historic. Exploring new waters, and creating their own charts has seen WASSP Multibeam Sonar Systems become ‘must have’ equipment for superyacht owners with WASSP systems now protecting over 1500m of superyachts globally. WASSP Multibeam Sonars are now installed onto superyachts from some of the worlds leading builders, including vessels from Amels, Damen, Feadship, Lurssen, Sunseeker, Fincantieri, Oceanco, Abeking and Rasmussen. Vessels as small as 29m through to over 190m in length. Squid Trawler Reaping Benefits of WASSP F3X

  A squid-fishing trawler operating in the waters around the Falkland Islands is reaping the benefits having installed a WASSP F3X multibeam sonar system. The 83 metre F/V Igueldo had an acoustic upgrade recently with the installation of a WASSP F3X – installed by one of WASSP’s Spanish dealer’s, Nautical with full support from Furuno Spain. With the F3X installed, the Igueldo began trialing the new system in the deep and often rough waters of the Falkland Islands. It was soon apparent to the captain that even small amounts of squid were being clearly seen on the sounder and recorded on the 3D Bathymetric map. Also, the 3D vision and the hardness of the sea bottom are very good but needs some fine tuning during the next call of Igueldo to Vigo, our home port,” says F/V Igueldo Captain, Miguel Pouseu. As with many other Captains, WASSP technical engineers will work with Capatain Pouseu to fine tune the system to suit his specific needs. “In my personal opinion the F3X represents a real leap forward in WASSP technology. The WASSP team should be very happy and I fully recommend the F3X.” The latest model in the F3 range, designed exclusively for the commercial fishing industry, the F3X incorporates a number of significant improvements by WASSP’s design engineers. It offers significantly more power - over 12 times more than previous F3 models - along with a long pulse time that equates to more energy in the water. In addition to more clarity in shallow and medium depths, the F3X with its 80kHz transducer can operate at depths of 1000m with mapping of the seafloor and water column targets such as fish schools shown clearly at 850m. Meet the team on Booths 409 or 533   On 25th and 26th January, WASSP will be exhibiting at the Eastern Canadian Fisheries Exposition being held at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Canada's longest-running and most successful commercial fishing show, this Expo is held every two years and offers visitors a comprehensive showcase of products and services for the commercial fisheries industry. It attracts visitors from across Canada and the eastern United States, including fish harvesters, fish processors, those involved in the workboat industry, search & rescue organizations, and other professions relating to the marine industries. For WASSP, this event represents an excellent opportunity to promote its F3 series of multibeam sonar, including the F3X which offers a new standard of performance with better target detection at depths of up to 1000 metres as well as more powerful processing and enhanced screen clarity. Designed specifically for the fishing industry, all models in the F3 series feature 224 beams scanning a 120° swath, port to starboard, enabling dynamic fish detection in the water column and helping to maximise the catch and save fuel by reducing the time spent steaming. The F3 also delivers high resolution seafloor profiling in real-time, ensuring the easy identification of reefs, wrecks, foreign objects and seafloor hardness changes that could cause costly damage to fishing gear.

ENL Sales & Service Open for Business

• Covid-19 Located at Wairau Valley (HQ), New Westhaven Sales office, Nelson, London and NZ Online from 15th May. I wanted to provide an update to all our customers, suppliers and staff, of how ENL are managing under Covid-19.    Like all New Zealand organisations, we had a very challenging time under Level 4, but fortunately as an essential services business we could continue to support the commercial fishing fleet throughout New Zealand. We are very grateful to our commercial fishing customers for making their vessels a safe environment for our service engineers to work in, at such short notice! We have had to adapt rapidly to this unusual environment. One new implementation by ENL during lockdown has been the creation of an online sales capability, driven by customer demand. While ENL continue to have a strong dealer network from Kaitaia down to Invercargill we encourage consumers to buy from our loyal agents in their desired region. However, we also recognise that it’s not always convenient to go to a store to buy a product and or accessories especially in these times, so have made it easier for our customers to access our products and services online. Just one day before New Zealand entered level 4 lockdown ENL moved into a new Sales and Service office located in the heart of Westhaven.
